Business papers, 1796-1815.

The records include shipping papers for the first voyage of the ship OLIVE BRANCH to St. Croix (1801); for the second, third, fourth and fifth voyages of the brig NANCY to Cap François, Havana and St. Lucia (1800-1802); the second voyage of the brig ARISTIDES to Hamburg (1801); and the second voyage of the schooner EUTAW to the West Indies (1797-1799). The papers include ship's articles, accounts, manifests and bills of lading. There is also a bill of sale for the sloop PERSEVERANCE (1815). There are 25 letters (1796-1806) from corresponding merchants, mostly from Troup & Brown at Port au Prince. Other merchants include: Peter Dorey and John Van Cleve (Cap François), Tucker & Butler (Nassau), Runekel, Ruys & Co. (Amsterdam), and John Jones (Charleston).

Manuel Eyre, a Philadelphia merchant of Quaker ancestry, was born in 1777. His father, Manuel Eyre, Sr., (1736-1805) was a shipwright in Kensington and a colonel in the Contintental Army. He obtained his training in the counting house of Henry Pratt and Abraham Kintzing and in 1803 joined with Charles Massey, Jr., (b. 1778) to form the mercantile firm of Eyre & Massey, a partnership that lasted until Eyre's death in 1845.
